Thursday #morningwalk It's the last day for kids at Davidson Elementary and other Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. South a Street was busy this morning - expecting silence tomorrow. Plus other #morningwalk finds. A few sights from walks in Davidson last night and this morning. #morningwalk Reflecting on this weekend's #CornellReunion. A college reunion is a crossroads of geography, time and lives. For me, all these intersections squeezed into a few days have been moving and invigorating. It's been a chance to renew old friendships and build new ones. To mark the passage of time in new wrinkles and graying hair - and in changes to the built environment on campus. Some old haunts and hangouts are gone - left only in memories. Others remain, familiar but worn and altered by generations that came after us. (This is #45 for me.) Sure there are casual conversations - those by now well-rehearsed elevator speeches in answer to "So what are you up to?" But what has been so moving are the many conversations that turned real and earnest and emotional. Our hearts are open when we're with those who shared our formative years, then separated. The environment of a reunion forces reflection and even self-evaluation. Major life changes are the zeitgeist. So many stories - good and not so good - about careers winding down, searching for next acts, family successes and dramas, the loss of partners. More than a few conversations about the future of the University and the political moment we're in - and what can be done. And new bonds formed over sports playoffs on the class headquarters screen. My thanks to our class reunion committee and the university for this too brief and priceless moment. Hey, if you can get outside or to a window soon, check out this weekend's conjunction of Venus and Jupiter. They're extremely close for the first time in a long time. I caught it from the corner of Irving and Mount Pleasant in DC's Mount Pleasant neighborhood. #skyshow Got many glimpses of McGraw Tower at Cornell during #CornellReunion, from evening tent parties on the Arts Quad to the overhead view from Johnson Museum. (4) You can see the major renovation of McGraw Hall from the museum. It's the third oldest building on campus. The exterior is being preserved, with a completely new interior. Last pic: a Cornell athlete did a handstand as I photographed the West wall of Barton Hall. Can't visit Cornell without a stop at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum. Faces and figures caught my eye this time. 1) from the "Old Friend Revisited" series Thomas Schutte; 2) Fisherman with Basket and Net, carved Ivory from Japan Meiji period, artist unrecorded; 3) Mayan figure, roughly 300-900, artist unrecorded; 4) Syrian helmet; 5) Chinese Tang Dynasty tomb guardian; 6) Reog Ponorogo Mask, Indonesia; 7) figure of a girl by 19th century French painter William-Adolphe Bougereau. #CornellReunion 16 hours in DC on my northern road trip. Had dinner with @colette.4 and @tilly.boraks at Lapis and bunked at The Line DC. On to Ithaca. Found objects Tuesday #morningwalk
