December 2017 is the 20th anniversary of a sad incident in Davidson, NC – the Christmas 1997 altercation that resulted in the deaths of Davidson resident Damon Kerns and police officer Mark Swaney.
On Nov. 30, Davidson College students presented findings from interviews and other research about Swaney and Kerns, race relations in Davidson, journalism, and the current state of politics and race relations in Davidson. It was part of a course taught by visiting professor Issac Bailey.
Here’s an audio recording of the hour-long presentation, with a recounting of the incident, students findings, interviews with residents who were there or remember the case, and students’ thoughts on the current state of race relations in town.
David: Thank you for “publishing” this piece. I listened to it with great interest.
