Had a quick tour this weekend of Mandolino’s, the new “artisan pizza” restaurant opening on Main Street Davidson later this month (February 2018). Partners Jason Tognarina and Chef Bill Schutz showed us around the renovated space in the former Millstone Bake House, next door to Town Hall and across the street from the partners’ other restaurant, Flatiron Kitchen + Taphouse.
Bill says this will be the “grandma style” pizza he remembers from his New York childhood – baked in 700+ degree oven in a rectangular pan. They’ll start out with a menu of pizzas with a choice of toppings, plus salads, including a “make your own” salad. Later they’ll add pastas.
Jason, our neighborhood sommelier, promises a good selection of beers and a wine list with an emphasis on Italy.
They’ve opened a doorway to upstairs (the former Upper Crust) where they have a bar and more seating. My prediction: This may become a hangout for townies.
